Baiona's Fish Market

España - Pontevedra - Baiona

General information

The Baiona fishmarket is located at the entrance to the fishing port, an area tantamount in size to the current marine promenade. This area is assigned to the auction of fish and shellfish and It is where the compulsory initial sale of all fish and shellfish, responsibility of the holders of the authorization and concession of the fishmarket, such fishermen guilds, cooperatives and vendors including, in some cases, the actual Port Authority itself, takes place.

It is in this first sale when the output price is put on the product and labeled for the first time. The label must specify the catch area, sender details, common and scientific name of the species, weight, method of production and presentation that specifies whether the product is wild or from aquafarming, details of the vessel and fishing method, date of catch and dispatch, the fisheries trademark (“pescaenverde”, “pescadeRias¿deondesenon?”) and traceability code. This trademark may accompany the product throughout the marketing process, provided that the other operators along the chain are also certified users.

The label serves as information on the traceability of the product and assists in the choice of fish and/or shellfish, ensuring that the purchase is a local fresh and quality product (mark “pescadeRias¿deondesenon?”; ecolabel “pescaenverde”).

In addition to the area dedicated to the auction, it has equipment storerooms for sailors, several cold stores for the conservation of fish and offers a bait sale service and an ice factory.

The auction takes place at different times, depending on the season and the type of catch can be consulted directly at the fishmarket.

The fish products that can be found in the fish market come from the abundance of the sea, such as the sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus), the barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes), the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) or the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

The Fishermen's Guild that manages the Baiona fish market is called "La Anunciada" (The Announced) and is a public, non-profit corporation that acts as a consultation and collaboration agency with the Administration in the promotion of the fishing sector and represents the economic and corporate interests of the sector's professionals.

Its territorial scope extends from Abra Beach (Patos) to the Orelludas Islands, including the Estelas and Carallóns Islands.
